Recognizing and Responding to Microaggresions offers a collaborative opportunity to deepen your practice in identity-related bias incident support.
- Build an understanding of transformative bias impact response and the fundamentals of “first response”.
- Think proactively about mitigating impact so that you can respond in meaningful ways if–and when–microaggressions and other harmful, identity-related incidents occur.
- Increase your ability to recognize interactions, statements and behaviors that can impact students, team members, colleagues, families, and the broader community.
Part 1: Bias Impact Response: A Transformative Option (1.0 hr)
Orient yourself to the principles and objectives of transformative bias impact response, learn the fundamentals of “first response after bias incidents, and begin exploring organizational value and goal alignment.
Part 2: Recognizing and Responding to Microaggressions (1.5 hrs)
Engage in collective learning about commonly (and uncommonly) known equity and inclusion terms, definitions and concepts to increase ability to recognize interactions, statements and behaviors that can impact customers, members, students colleagues, and overall organizational environment; Explore strategies for interrupting and responding to microaggressions and other identity-related interactions that can negatively impact the community climate and disrupt relationships.
Part 3 (optional): Practice Responding to Microaggressions (1.0 hour)
Return to the Bias Impact Response practice room to debrief, participate in practice scenarios, and learn from others in community.
